Step stools are half way between a ladder and a stool, being used, as a support platform, for reaching targets that are at heights between ~2m and ~3m. The most common modern type is made with two separate ladders connected to each other at the upper end, where there is a platform with an area big enough to stand with both feet on it, having the rest of steps the same area, but not in all models, for some step stools have classical ladder steps. This folding design arrangement eliminates the need for a fixed support on a wall, as in the case of a standard ladder. They are widely used in the kitchen, to the point that in some places they are called "kitchen ladder".[1][2]

From the small wooden stool, the Step stool grew to allow grabbing objects from higher places. The need led to the addition of a couple of steps, first of wood and then of light metal. The multi-step ones are also equipped with safety railings for the taller models. They are usually foldable so that they can be easily stored and transported.[3]

To meet the needs of construction professionals, step stools have been redesigned for very specific uses such as scaffold ladders and giraffe ladders.

Step stools have a wide range of uses, being an important aid for working at home. The ones with a wide platform, they are very practical for wall painters, who can even walk on the platform without having to go up&down every time they need to change their work area a few inches. They are used, for example, to change light bulbs and fluorescent lights in rooms with high ceilings, to pick fruit in horticulture and other activities. They are also used by photographers when they need a higher overall viewing point. Some models can be used as a sitting stool.[4]

They are suitable only for use on floors with a flat surface and are not usable on those with irregular surfaces. They can be used as a ladder, but they have the advantage of being more comfortable to be able to stand on its wider platform. For small heights they are safer than a normal ladder. However, they have the disadvantage of being less stable than a "normal ladder resting on the wall" so care should be taken when using a high step stool (or folding ladder) instead of a normal ladder placed against the wall, because with an imbalance it could tip over, someone holding it would be advisable.[5]

It may seem silly, but since most people have regular chairs in their homes, having the ability to sit in something like a bar stool helps them relax more and enjoy getting out, since it’s less like their homes.

Cons:

Even though there are some clear advantages to having bar stools, there are also some clear disadvantages. One obvious reason is their height. This is usually a problem for older or very young customers, who have trouble getting on and off the stools. While these groups don’t make up your whole customer base, it certainly makes them less likely to come to, or recommend, your restaurant.

There’s also an argument from younger people, that says bar stools are clunky and difficult to move. This can be for a few reasons, but mostly happens when the stools have armrests or they don’t swivel. While having armrests can be nice at times, when the bar area is crowded, it makes moving and getting out of your space rather difficult. Having a swivel bar stool is great because it can help you maneuver out of crowded bars. But if your chair doesn’t have a swivel then sometimes it can seem impossible to get out.

Another reason people dislike bar stools is because they’re uncomfortable. Not all bar stools have backs, which doesn’t give the person sitting in one much support. While some people might not mind, this could be a deal breaker for some customers, especially older ones. Also, since stools are usually made of wood or metal, be sure to provide some kind of cushion too. Both of those options can become really uncomfortable if you sit on them for a long period of time, so the best way to avoid this problem is by buying cushioned stools or a cushion for people to add on their own.

It’s clear that bar stools can be great for your restaurant, but they’re not a necessity. Before deciding, look at your space to see if you have room for them in the bar space for them. Keep some features in mind such as armrests, cushions, and the swivel ability when you’re looking, as they may alter the price of the stools.
